Google Apps passes two million customers

Google (GOOG) said it now has two million customers use its products Apps. The online software offers many features of Microsoft (MSFT) Windows, but runs on Google's servers and not on the user's PC.

Although the customer base Apps is growing, it may not be representative of much income for the search giant. According to Reuters, "These include both large companies who pay $ 50 per year per user for applications, as well as companies with fewer than 50 employees who obtain the software free."

Because products Apps only be a small part of what Windows is capable of doing, the likelihood that Google will really compete with the largest software company is still modest. Microsoft has recently proved embarrassing for the server side where the products are defective. He lost, at least temporarily, data from thousands of T-Mobile Sidekick handset customers. This debacle was caused by problems with the servers that Microsoft uses to store customer data from T-Mobile.

Microsoft Sidekick problem shows why customers that store information on servers and not their devices are at risk of catastrophic loss of data. The incident harming the image of Microsoft, but it also highlights a vulnerability in the Google Apps server side products. Google G-Mail product was down several times in recent weeks. What happens if their servers Apps have a major glitch and Apps customers can not access their data? Google Images could take the beating that even Microsoft did.
